Appreciating Tea Time

A Tea Time ho imparatto moltissimi fatti interessanti sugli anziani che vivono a Lugano. Quando erano giovani, hanno avuto una adolescenza molto diversa dalla nostra. Molti si svegliavano prestissimo per andare a lavorare, e andare a scuola. Aveva faccende da fare, dovevano pulire la casa e aiutare i loro genitori. La sera o nei weekend non potevano uscire, anche se la signora Yolanda ci ha rivelato che lei scappava di casa alla notte per andare a ballare e a divertirsi con i propri amici. Ho anche imparato che la città era molto diversa, non c'erano molti negozi, e le macchine non venivano praticamente usate, quindi era difficile spostarsi per Lugano. Penso che Tea Time sia molto importante per la comunità, riporta i giovani d'oggi al passato, e ci fa apprezzare ciò che abbiamo oggi. 




At tea time I learn many interesting facts about the elderly who live in Lugano. When they were younger, they had a very different adolescence from ours. Many woke up early to go to work, and then they had to go to school. They had a lot of chores to do, and help their parents everytime they could. In the evening or on weekends they couldn't go out even if Ms.Yolanda told us that she used to sneak out her house at nigh,t to go dancing and to have fun with her friends. I also learned that the city was very different, there were not many shops and cars were not used very much, so it was difficult to move around Lugano. I think that Tea Time is very important for the community, it brings younger generations to the past, and it makes them appreciate what they have today.

Reflection from Nicole

Ogni settimana parlando con le Signore di Lugano ci scambiamo punti di vista molto diversi.

Noi ragazzi abbiamo un punto di vista diverso dal loro. La scorsa settimana parlando con le Signore di Lugano ci siamo chiesti come potessero vivere in un paesino cosi piccolo dove si conoscono tutti e le cose da fare sono poche. Giustamente hanno capovolto la domanda, chiedendoci come noi potessimo vivere in una città dove c’è molta confusione, tante persone che non conosciamo, poco sicura e abitare in condomini alti. La nostra risposta è stata ovvia; noi siamo giovani e ci piace la confusione, incontrare per strada diverse persone che non conosciamo, vivere in condomini è molto più comodo che vivere in una villetta, in quanto la gestione di un codominio è molto più semplice.  Noi apparteniamo ad un’altra generazione dove le grandi città sono in continuo movimento come noi.

Every time when talking  with the seniors from Lugano, we see that we have different ways of seeing things. 

Last week talking with seniors from Lugano, we asked them how they can live in such a small town where everybody knows each other, and where there arent many things to do. They changed the question and asked us how can we live in big cities where there is noise, lots of unknown people, where there is no safety and how can we live in appartaments. Our answer was obvious: we are young and we like the confusion. Living in apartment buildings, where the management is much simpler, is more comfortable than living in a cottage. We belong to another generation where larger cities are in constant motion as we do.

My Impression of TeaTime

Tea Time this year has been a pleasure for us but what is different for the first time is that we feel welcome by the seniors. They accept us and are willing to share their experiences with us, this gives out a feeling that we actually managed to built a friendship with them. It is also an activity that goes past the one hour per week, recently I met one of the seniors in town and it was a pleasure catching up with her. All these things about our activity make it a well spend time, that gets every single one of us involved. I am looking forward to another semester with our seniors.

What I learnt at Tea Time

Parlando con la gente anziana di Lugano, mi ha dato un'idea su come era la vita a Lugano anni fa'. Non era come e' oggi, oggi Lugano e' una citta' economicamente avanzata con pochissima poverta'. Ai tempi dove gli anziani vivevano a Lugano era molto diverso, non era cosi' facile arriva in centro, non c'erano bus e taxi come ci sono oggi. Tanti dei posti che frequento io adesso non esistevano neanche a quei tempi. Ho imparato che tanti dei anziani lavoravano in campagna da giovani, questo mi da l'impressione che c'erano piu contadini che ci sono oggi. Mi fa piacere e mi interessa sapere come era il posto dove vivo prima
e non vedo l'ora di imparare e sentire nuove storie su com'era la vita a Lugano quando io non c'ero ancora.
