Visita a scuola

Mercoledi scorso tre signore della comunità di Montagnola sono venute a trovarci a scuola. Ci siamo in gruppetti di 2-3 e le abbiamo accompagnate a visitare il campus. Tutte e tre sono rimaste molto colpite dalla bellezza della scuola e dalla vitalità dei ragazzi. Sebbene facesse piuttosto freddo e il pavimento fosse ghiacciato, la signora Jolanda, di cui ero accompagnatrice assieme a Franz, é salita sulla collina fino al dormitorio di Lanterna per dare un occhiata all'edificio e ammirare il panorama del campus ricoperto di neve. E' rimasta particolarmente colpita da De Nobili per la sua maestosità e per le sue sale decorate da armi e dipinti. Purtroppo abbiamo avuto solo quarantacinque minuti per visitare la scuola e non abbiamo potuto fermarci per parlare. Quando verranno a trovarci l'anno prossimo speriamo di aver piu' tempo per una chiacchierata e una tazza di té.

Stories From Tea Time - Alex Novak

Having joined the tea time group, I was able to learn many stories from lives of elderly people who lived in Ticino all their lives.In particular I was interested in stories told by signora Fontana.It turns out life of Swiss people was completely different from what I imagined it to be. People's lives were simple, without any conveniences of everyday life we are able to enjoy nowadays. From an early age children had to help their parents at home. Also school was not as important as it is today,since people finished only a few classes. Most of ones life happened in the community that person lived in; cars were not available, and if you had to go somewhere you would have to travel by feet. Furthermore, I really enjoyed stories by signora Yolanda who shared with us her adventures of the Lugano night life. It turns out, our generation is not the only one who enjoys dancing! Signora Yolanda would quietly sneak out from her house to go dancing. She is a woman who certainly enjoys adventures. Overall, I really enjoyed the time I spent listening to fascinating stories of the two ladies, and I really look forward to hear more from other people.

Quando mi sono iscritto al gruppo di Teat Time, ho capito che avevo la possibilita di sentire delle storie interessanti raccontate da persone anziane chi abitano in Ticino per tutta la loro vita. Nel nostro ultimo incontro noi avevamo il piacere di incontrare due signore che abitano a Montagnola, e le storie di Signora Fontata mi sono piacuti tantissimo. Ho scoperto che le vite delle persone anziane in Svizzera erano molto diverse di come l'imagginavo. Le vita quotidiana era molto semplice, ma anche difficile. I bambini dovevano sempre aiutare i loro genitori, e la scuola non era cosi importante come e al giorno d'oggi. Le persone finivano gli studi dopo tre anni. Siccome le macchine non erano disponibile, le persone dovevano camminare per raggiungere il centro della citta. Inoltre, le storie della signora Yolanda erano veramente divertentissimi. Ho scoperta che la nostra generazione non e la sola a chi piace ballare. Quando signora Yolanda era giovane, lei scappava di casa per andare a ballare.Spero di sentire delle storie interessante anche la prossima volta!  

Tea Time experience

I enjoied the time because we learned how Lugano was like many years ago. We met some of the old residents of Montagnola. These included 3 women. I would like to focus on one of the women which has introduced herself as a party anima. This women is 74 years old. This woman is living life at the fullest, I wish that when I reach her age I will be able to still enjoy life as much as she does. She says that she would never back down from a party or some event and she describes Montagnola as boring, for this reason she would like to move to the downtown of Lugano in order to be interactive with other people. I am amazed from her will to always meet new people and have a good time although of her older age.

Mi e piaciuto tea time, perché abbiamo imparato come Lugano era molti anni fa. Abbiamo incontrato alcuni dei vecchi abitanti di Montagnola. Questi erano 3 donne. Vorrei concentrarmi su una delle donne che si è presentata come una festeggiatrice. Questa donna ha 74 anni. Questa donna vive la vita al massimo, vorrei che quando raggiungo la sua età sarò in grado di approfittare la vita tanto quanto lei. Lei dice che non direbbe mai di no a una festa o un evento e descrive Montagnola come noioso, per questo motivo le piacerebbe trasferirsi nel centro di Lugano, per essere piu interattivo con altre persone. Sono stupito dalla sua volontà di incontrare sempre nuove persone e avere un buon tempo, anche se la sua età e più anziane.

"I vecchi tempi" della Sig.ra Fontana - Francesca

I primi due giorni abbiamo conosciuto la signora Fontana. E 'una donna molto gentile, e ci ha raccontato un po' della sua vita, una delle cose che ho trovato molto interessante è stato il fatto che i suoi genitori erano molto protettivi di lei. Le abbiamo chiesto cosa faceva quando era un'adolescente con i suoi amici e se usciva o andava a ballare e ci ha detto che i suoi genitori non l'avrebbe lasciata. Le ho chiesto se avesse mai provato a uscire furtivamente di casa e mi disse che non era nemmeno tentata di farlo. Lei non era interessata a fare festa, ballare o uscire con gli amici, preferiva lavorare con suo padre alla fattoria.
E 'molto interessante vedere come i genitori erano così severe a quei tempi, e mi chiedo che cosa sarebbe come per noi ora. Se i nostri genitori fossero come loro, sarebbe molto frustrante. Non riesco ancora a capire perché lei non voleva uscire come la signora Yolanda, i suoi genitori non la avrebbero sentita scappare, ma preferiva comunque rimanere a casa e andare a letto presto visto che doveva lavorare.E' stato molto strano sentire parlare di quello che facevano gli adolescenti di allora e dei loro diversi stili di vita, spero di saperne di più sul loro "divertimento"!

In the first Tea Time we went to visit Mrs. Fontana and Mrs. Yolanda to know something more about the place we live. Were not fairy tales or invented stories, but more. Stories of their childhood in Montagnola. Stories and tea. What's amazing arrangement! 

Their life was completely different from the present day. Mrs. Fontana is smoother then Yolanda. In her youth Yolanda was a kind of young person who came out of hiding without shoes not to be heard by her parents.

The second time we went to the meeting there were Mrs. Yolanda and another one woman. More or less the talked about the same things. Life and work in Montagnola and how spent their time here.

It's been a pleasure to meet those amazing ladies, and I hope to hear other stories as soon as possible !

Al primo incontro di tea time siamo andati a visitare la signora Fontana e Yolanda per sapere qualcosa di più riguardo al posto in cui viviamo. Non erano favole o storie inventate ma di più. Storie riguardo alla loro gioventù in Montagnola. Storie e thè. Che fantastica combinazione!

La loro vita era completamente differente dai giorni nostri. La signora Fontana è più tranquilla di Yolanda. Quando era giovane Yolanda era quel tipo di adolescente che usciva fuori di nascosto con le scarpe in mano per non farsi sentire dai genitori.

La seconda volta che abbiamo avuto l’incontro c’era la Yolanda e un altra signora. Più o meno abbiamo parlato delle stesse cose. Vita e lavoro in Montagnola  e come passavano il loro tempo qui.

È stato un piacere incontrare queste fanstastiche signore, e spero di sentire altre storie il prima possibile!

Let's Go Back in Time...

      In the last two weeks we met two ladies that live in Montagnola: Mrs. Fontana ans Mrs. Yolanda. They are very different from one another. Mrs. Fontana always lived in Montagnola with her family. She spent most of her life working in the fields, with animals and helping with house work. Her parents were very strict with her and they never let her go out dancing with her friends. She didn't even never ask them because she knew straightaway that they were gonna say no. She told us that Montagnola was a very small village and the streets weren't paved yet. She sometimes walked downtown to sell the products they cultivated. But other than that she never went downtown, even nowadays.

On the other hand, Mrs. Yolanda is a very energetic senior. she told us about her childhood and adolescence. She was born in Canton Grigioni, spent most of her childhood there and then she moved to Lugano. When she was a teenager, her hobby was dancing. She usually sneaked out from the house late at night when everyone was asleep and she went clubbing with her friends and when she came back home she would take off the shoes in order not to make noises. She confessed that even nowadays she would love to go dancing, but she would feel a bit shy... It was very interesting earring all of these different stories from seniors, and it's very hard for us to imagine them once they were also teenagers. I really hope to earn many more stories from other seniors or to deepen these we already heard.

   Nelle ultime due settimane abbiamo incontrato due signore che vivono a Montagnola: la signora Fontana e la signora Yolanda. Sono molto diverse l'una dall'altra. La signora Fontana ha sempre vissuto a Montagnola con la sua famiglia. Ha trascorso gran parte della sua vita la lavorare nei campi, con gli animali e ad aiutare la madre con i lavori domestici. I suoi genitori erano molto severi con lei e non la lasciavano mai uscire con i suoi amici o andare a ballare. Lei non osava nemmeno chiedere il permesso ai suoi genitori perché sapeva che avrebbero detto comunque di no e in più non sentiva neanche la necessita' e la voglia di uscire. Ci ha raccontato che Montagnola era un villaggio molto piccolo quando lei era ancora una bambina, e le strade non erano ancora asfaltate. A volte camminava fino in centro per vendere i prodotti che coltivavano nei campi. Ma a parte questo non andava mai in città, anche al giorno d'oggi, non ci va molto spesso.
D'altra parte, la signora Yolanda è una signora che sebbene gli anni aumentano e' molto "sprint", piena di vitalità. Ci ha raccontato della sua infanzia e adolescenza. E' nata nel Canton Grigioni, e ha trascorso gran parte della sua infanzia lì e poi si è trasferita a Lugano. Quando era un adolescente, il suo hobby era ballare. Ci ha svelato che a volte usciva di nascosto da casa durante notte, quando tutti dormivano e andava a ballare con i suoi amici e quando tornava a casa si toglieva sempre le scarpe per non fare rumori e rischiare di svegliare qualcuno. Ci ha confessato che anche ai giorni d'oggi le piacerebbe molto andare ancora a ballare, ma si vergognerebbe un pochino. E' stato molto interessante ascoltare tutte queste storie, soprattutto perché erano molto diverse tra di loro. è molto difficile per noi immaginare la vita di queste signori ai tempi che avevano la nostra eta'. Spero ci saranno molte altre occasioni per incontrare altri anziani e ascoltare le storie che hanno da raccontarci sulla loro vita oppure opportunità per approfondire queste che abbiamo già ascoltato per scoprire altre loro esperienze.

Our first story.

Wednesday, the 20th of October, we had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Jolanda, Mrs. Fontana and Mrs Bernasconi, three ladies of the community of Montagnola. Mrs. Fontana and Mrs. Teresina grew up and have always lived in Ticino. Mrs. Jolanda originally come from canton Grigioni, but has spent most of her life in Lugano. We started by chatting a little bit while sipping tea and eating cookies to break the ice.
We soon learned that life in Montagnola was not as easy as it is now. Many people went to school only till fifth grade and then devoted themselves to working for the family.  The streets were not paved and cars rarely passed by. What most surprised me was Mrs. Jolanda's story. When she was young, her favorite pastime was dancing. She would sneak out of the house late at night without her parents knowing and when she came back she would take off her shoes before entering so that she would not get caught. It is interesting to compare our current society to how it was a few decades ago. Still today, young people go clubbing on weekends, but they would never imagine their grandparents do the same.



Mercoledi 20 ottobre, abbiamo avuto il piacere di incontrare la signora Jolanda, la signora Fontana e la signora Bernasconi, tre abitanti di Montagnola. La signora Fontana e la signora Teresina sono nate e cresciute in Ticino. La signora Jolanda invece e' originaria del canton grigioni, ma ha vissuto la maggior parte della sua vita a Montagnola. Abbiamo incominciato l'incontro chiacchierando un po' mentre sorseggiavamo te' e biscotti per rompere il ghiaccio. Abbiamo presto imparato che la vita a Montagnola non era facile come al giorno d'oggi. Molte persone andavano a scuola solo fino alla quinta elementare e dedicavano molto tempo al lavoro con i propri familiari. Le strade non erano pavimentate e le macchine passavano raramente. Cio' che mi ha piu' sorpresa era la storia della signora Jolanda. Quando era giovane il suo passatempo preferito era ballare . Usciva di nascosto nel cuore della notte senza che i suoi lo sapessero e quando tornava si toglieva le scarpe per non farsi scoprire. E' interessante comparare la nostra societa' nel a quella di alcuni decenni fa. Ancora oggi, i giovani vanno a ballare durante il fine settimana, ma non immaginerebbero mai i propri nonni fare lo stesso.

Mrs. Fontana and her life story.

Last week we went to Montagnola to visit its seniors. We met two ladies, Mrs.Fontana and Mrs.Yolanda.
Their stories were very different, Mrs.Yolanda was more outgoing than Mrs.Fontana. Her parents didn't really let her go out and she wasn't interested either. She always worked, even when she was little. One of the thing that I was surprised more in Mrs. Fontana is that she took the plane once in her life, to go to Lourde. She was very scared about the idea of having to take a plane , but when she did it was a good place to visit because it is one of the most holy places in the world.

It was very interesting meeting her. It was like I expected, 70 years ago everything was very different. I am hoping to hear more about her stories or even somebody else story.

La settimana scorsa siamo andati a Montagnola a visitare due signore anziane. 

Abbiamo incontrato due signore: Mrs.Fontana e Mrs.Yolanda.

Le loro storie erano molto diverse tra di loro; Quella di Mrs.Yolanda era più divertente. 

I suoi genitori in realtà non la lasciavano andare fuori e non era interessati neanche. Lavorava sempre anche quando era piccola. 

Una delle cose che mi ha sorpreso di più della  signora Fontana è che ha preso una decisione importante nella sua vita per andare a Lourde. Lei era moltospaventata dall'idea di dover prendere un aereo, ma dopo averlo fatto, era contenta di aver visitato una delle città più sacre del mondo.

E 'stato molto interessante. 

70 anni fa era tutto molto diverso. Io spero di sentire di più le sue storie e di riuscire a capire di più come era la vita tanti anni fa.
L'immagine che ho postato rappresenta la sua vita perché lei ha sempre lavorato.

It's Tea Time! - E' l'ora del te'!

I just switched to Tea Time, this is my second time here. Last time we went to meet Mrs. Fontana and other two ladies to share stories of their childhood and their hard times in Montagnola, while enjoying some tea. It is quite surreal to think about all they had to do at our age compared to what we do. Their adolescence was all about working for their family.
It was fun to hear about the times they escaped from their houses to go clubbing, and to hear them share their stories with a little sadness and the nostalgy of the good times. It's hard for a society so advanced like ours of today to see the world how they saw it and to relate to it, back when there were no cars, no television, or no phones. Chatting with them gives a lot of thought to mind. It was very amusing, and I wonder how we would survive in those conditions. I look forward to meeting them again and finding out some more about them and their "history"!

Mi sono appena iscritta a Tea Time, ed era la mia seconda volta qui. Nelle ultime settimane siamo andati a conoscere la Signora Fontana e due altre signore per ascoltare le loro esperienze di gioventu', della dura vita a Montagnola, bevendo un po' di te'. E' molto difficile e quasi surreale pensare a tutto quello che dovevano fare loro alla nostra eta' rispetto a tutto cio' che facciamo noi adesso.
Era bello sentirle parlare delle volte che scappavano di casa per andare in discoteca con un po' di nostalgia e tristezza per il ricordo dei vecchi tempi. E' difficile per una societa' cosi' avanzata e progredita come la nostra al giorno d'oggi capire il mondo com'era ai loro tempi, quando non c'erano macchine, televisione, o telefoni, e parlandone con loro fa riflettere. Sembra quasi impossibile sopravvivere senza di queste cose adesso! Spero di rincontrarle per raccontarci un po' di piu' di "storie!"

Tea Time Explanation

In Tea Time we have a goal, we go to a places all close to Montagnola, and try to slowly build a friendship with the local seniors. Other than friendship we try to collect stories from them, stories of the life in Montagnola 70 to 80 years ago. Life back in those days was very different then how we know it now, not only the culture was different but also every day activities were diverse such as washing clothes in a little village without the now a day technology.

A Tea Time, abbiamo un obiettivo, andare in tutti i posti vicinia Montagnola, e provare a costruire lentamente una amicizia congli anziani locali. Piu' che l'amicizia, si cerca diraccogliere le loro storie, storie di vita aMontagnola 70-80 anni fa. La vita in quei giorniera molto diversa da come la conosciamo noi ora, non solola cultura era diversa, ma anche le attività giornaliere eranodiverse, come lavare i panni in un piccolo villaggiosenza l'aiuto della tecnologia di oggi.

Mrs.Yolanda: The party animal

With our group, the second time we went to Montagnola to talk to the seniors, we met with Mrs.Yolanda.

Mrs. Yolanda when she was young was very different from Mrs.Fontana, she was more like young people are now. Even if her parents didn't  let her, at night to go dancing , she used to sneak out. She left when everybody was sleeping, and since they were in many in her house her parents room wasn't near hers. Really late at night, when she came back from clubs. she used to take off her shoes and walk quietly to her room. She was more outgoing than Mrs.Fontana.

It was very interesting to hear about her life. I did not expect her to be like that , I thought she was more like Mrs.Fontana that never went clubbing and always worked. I didn't expect it because she didn't really look like that and because 70 years ago was different than today.

Con il nostro gruppo di Tea Time per  la seconda volta siamo andati a Montagnola a parlare con gli anziani, abbiamo incontrato Mrs.Yolanda.

La signora Yolanda quando era giovane era molto diverso da Mrs.Fontana, era più simile ai giovani d'oggi. Anche se i suoi genitori non glielo permettevano di andare a ballare alla sera, lei aveva l'abitudine di scappare da casa,andava via quando tutti dormivano, e dato che erano in molti nella sua casa ,la sua camera non era vicina a quella dei suoi genitori . A tarda notte, quando tornata dal club aveva l'abitudine di togliersi le scarpe e camminare tranquillamente verso la sua stanza. Ms. Yolamda usciva molto di più che Mrs.Fontana.

E 'stato molto interessante sentire la sua vita. Non mi aspettavo che lei fosse così, ho pensato che fosse più simile a Mrs.Fontana che non è mai andata a clubbing e ha sempre lavorato. Io non me l'aspettavo così perché non pensavo che 70 anni fa andassero a ballare.

The first two days we met with Mrs. Fontana. She is a very nice lady, and told us a little bit about her life, one of the things that I found very interesting was how protective her parents were of her. We asked her what she did when she was a teenager with her friends and if she went out or went clubbing and she told us that her parents wouldn't let her. I asked her if she ever tried sneaking out of the house and she said she wasn't even tempted to. She wasn't interested in partying or dancing or going out with her friends, she worked a lot with her father on the farm.

It's very interesting to see how parents were so strict at those times, and I wonder what it would be like for us now. If our parents were like that it would be very frustrating. I still can't understand why she wouldn't sneak out like Mrs. Yolanda, her parents didn't hear her but still she preferred staying at home and going to bed early since she had to work.
It was very strange hearing about what teenagers did back then and their different life styles, I hope to find out more about the "fun" that they had!

Why Tea Time makes a difference.

During our two first meetings, we went to Ms. Gygax's house.
There we met two old ladies excited to tell us their stories. They each told us different part of their life, and explained us the difference between now and when they were young.
We also offered a hot tea to drink, and some chocolate chip cookies. I'm sure they enjoyed as much as we did.


During these meetings, us students
recorded their stories in order to
remember every detail: because every
detail is a memory for them.

I know that most of the other students at TASIS, not in Tea Time will think that this service learning is pretty boring and that it doesn't teach us anything. However, they are wrong. I have to admit I might have also though this before trying it. As soon as we did out first meeting with Mrs. Fontana, I understood the purpose of this service learning: we want to know the past, we want to make these old ladies feel important, feel like if their past is important in our present. It actually is. We can't pretend to live in a city, without even knowing how it was before: we can't live the future without knowing the past. We want to show respect to our community.

Durante i nostri primi due meetings, siamo andati a casa di Ms. Gygax.
Abbiamo conosciuto due anziane signore, eccitate a raccontarci del loro passato. Ci hanno raccontato diverse parti della loro vita and ci hanno spiegato come era la vita nei loro tempi.
Le abbiamo offerto un te' e dei biscotti al cioccolato.
Durante questi meetings, noi studenti abbiamo registrato le loro storie, così che non potessimo dimenticarci neanche un piccolo dettaglio; perché' ogni dettaglio e' un ricordo importante per loro.
Lo so benissimo che molti studenti del TASIS che non fanno pare di Tea Time, pensano che questo Service Learning e' molto noioso e che a loro non importa niente di ascoltare delle signore raccontare della loro vita. Invece, si sbagliano dicendo questo, perché' forse anche io prima di essere in Tea Time pensavo così, ma dopo aver conosciuto e parlato con due brillanti signore, ho capito subito l'obbiettivo di questo gruppo: vogliamo conoscere il passato, fare sentire queste signore importanti, farle capire che il loro passato e' importante nel nostro presente e nel futuro. Non possiamo pretendere di vivere in una città senza conoscere come era prima, non possiamo vivere il futuro senza sapere il passato. Vogliamo rispettare la nostra comunità.
