Why Tea Time makes a difference.

During our two first meetings, we went to Ms. Gygax's house.
There we met two old ladies excited to tell us their stories. They each told us different part of their life, and explained us the difference between now and when they were young.
We also offered a hot tea to drink, and some chocolate chip cookies. I'm sure they enjoyed as much as we did.


During these meetings, us students
recorded their stories in order to
remember every detail: because every
detail is a memory for them.

I know that most of the other students at TASIS, not in Tea Time will think that this service learning is pretty boring and that it doesn't teach us anything. However, they are wrong. I have to admit I might have also though this before trying it. As soon as we did out first meeting with Mrs. Fontana, I understood the purpose of this service learning: we want to know the past, we want to make these old ladies feel important, feel like if their past is important in our present. It actually is. We can't pretend to live in a city, without even knowing how it was before: we can't live the future without knowing the past. We want to show respect to our community.

Durante i nostri primi due meetings, siamo andati a casa di Ms. Gygax.
Abbiamo conosciuto due anziane signore, eccitate a raccontarci del loro passato. Ci hanno raccontato diverse parti della loro vita and ci hanno spiegato come era la vita nei loro tempi.
Le abbiamo offerto un te' e dei biscotti al cioccolato.
Durante questi meetings, noi studenti abbiamo registrato le loro storie, così che non potessimo dimenticarci neanche un piccolo dettaglio; perché' ogni dettaglio e' un ricordo importante per loro.
Lo so benissimo che molti studenti del TASIS che non fanno pare di Tea Time, pensano che questo Service Learning e' molto noioso e che a loro non importa niente di ascoltare delle signore raccontare della loro vita. Invece, si sbagliano dicendo questo, perché' forse anche io prima di essere in Tea Time pensavo così, ma dopo aver conosciuto e parlato con due brillanti signore, ho capito subito l'obbiettivo di questo gruppo: vogliamo conoscere il passato, fare sentire queste signore importanti, farle capire che il loro passato e' importante nel nostro presente e nel futuro. Non possiamo pretendere di vivere in una città senza conoscere come era prima, non possiamo vivere il futuro senza sapere il passato. Vogliamo rispettare la nostra comunità.
